This particular type of stud poker is one that takes the strategy of several betting opportunities out of the game. The stud bad beats game is the same as any particular stud poker game that you might think of but it is played against the dealer rather than other players. You also only get four opportunities to bet in stud bad beats.

How stud bad beats works

To begin the game of stud bad beats poker an ante is needed. This is the amount that you will be betting through that particular hand of the game. Once you have placed your ante in stud bad beats you receive five cards; two down and three up. After these cards are dealt you may bet again if you wish to see two faces up cards which will be used as community cards. When you play stud, if you do not wish to see these two cards you may fold. If you bet at this point you may see the two faces up cards and use them to make the best possible hand of five cards. After you have seen the two faces up cards you may bet again when you play stud poker and see if your hand of the five best cards beats the dealer’s best possible hand of five cards.

Playing with/without stud lucky draws

As the cards are played in stud bad beats you may find that you are exposed to luck, or lack thereof. Stud poker strategy and luck are a part of any poker game, as is dealing with both. The stud poker strategy portion of the game is something that you’ll just have to learn over time. There is little that replaces experience. The luck factor, however, is something that you need to come to terms with. Stud lucky draws are something that just happens. Sometimes stud lucky draws happen more often for some and less for others, but counting on stud lucky draws is not a wise idea.

Avoiding the stud bad beats

If you care to avoid the need for stud lucky draws or unlucky draws consider playing fewer hands in games where the final card influences the outcome of the hand, play no-limit poker more often, know your limits, play fewer cash games and understand who you are and what your limits are financially and emotionally. When you play stud, if you happen to be worth $50 million you won’t necessarily need to worry about playing more no-limit games but if you’re a regular Joe consider that with a no-limit game you can bet your way out of a possible bad beat situation. You may have started a hand strong only to find a stud bad beats shaping up. When you play stud if you have your money in the pot, you can essentially buy the pot. If you don’t have the money, you’re susceptible to living with the stud bad beats. The biggest way to avoid the stud bad beats is to know who you are, not to be too emotionally involved and not being afraid to fold.
